How to Choose the Perfect Gown for Your Wedding

Wedding planning is rarely stress free, but the most important decision you have to make (after choosing the fiance, of course) is to choose the perfect wedding gown. It would be a great understatement to say that there are a plethora of options in the wedding world. You may feel overwhelmed and in uncharted territory, awash in a sea of bridal chiffon, lace, pearls, and fancy Italian fabrics. Have no fear! With a plan, a budget and some soul searching, you can and will find the perfect bridal attire for your special day. Here are a few tips:

When you picture your big day, what do you envision? What styles make you feel strong, fabulous and gorgeous? Do you see yourself in a simple chiffon shift, an elaborately ornate trumpet gown or a tulle and satin princess skirt? Think about what you really want, then take the steps to make it happen!

Make a budget

Before you venture out into the wonderful world of princess dresses, determine how much money you have, how much you are willing to spend and how far you are willing to go over budget for that one perfect dress– then stick with it.

Keep an open mind

Though you have a specific type of dress in mind, try on a variety of lengths, styles and fabrics. You may surprise yourself and find something super flattering outside of your usual style. Alternately, what looks good on a hanger may not look so great on an actual person, and it’s okay to change your mind and fall in love with another dress.
Another option is to look outside of traditional dresses. If nothing is ringing your bell, open up your options. Maybe you want to have a themed or costume wedding, or wear a formal skirt with a pretty top, or even join the growing number of women opting to wear pantsuits.

Fit yourself, not an ideal

You are an actual person, not a 2-dimensional magazine image. Don’t buy a smaller size in the hopes of dieting to fit into it at the wedding. Don’t follow trends if they don’t ring true to you. Don’t feel pressured to fit into a certain mold. Do some research on what types of dresses best suit your body type and research which shops and stores carry those styles.

With so many options to choose from, your quest may feel overwhelming at times, but with some planning, patience and effort, your perfect wedding gown (or pantsuit, bathing suit or mermaid costume) is but a short search away. Good luck and have fun finding it!
